Jim Christiansen/Painting, pen and ink, printmaking
RESIDENCE: Modesto; works out of 1928 vintage home, shared with mother, Virlee Christiansen.
DAY JOB: Self-employed artist, landlord and job seeker, mental health volunteer
In 1977, I moved to Modesto permanently, buying my first home with my brother Larry Christiansen,a professional international grandmaster chess player. Due to my brother's choice of occupation, and ventures into chess columns and books, I became a published chess cartoonist, with graphics on covers of Chess Life and other chess publications, with international exposure. A printmaking version of my most known cartoon, "Pawn Shop," hangs at the Boylston Chess Club in Cambridge, Mass., as part of the club's permanent collection.
