I can't describe my feelings

World Team Chess Championship winner Sergei Movsesian: I can't describe my feelings
July 28, 2011 - 18:39 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net - Grandmaster Sergei Movsesian shared his impressions after a win as a part of Armenian team at Ningbo-hosted World Team Chess Championship.

“I'm so glad to be a part of the Armenian team; such victories bring nothing but positive emotions,” he said in a conversation with a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

As the grandmaster confessed, every match in a championship was hard, as the team had to face strong rivals. Yet, Armenian team managed to keep up the good start they had, due to efforts they took at every match to gain a victory.

“We were heartily welcomed in Yerevan. I can't describe my feelings; I never though such a welcome possible in any country, maybe for football victories only. I thanked all Armenians for their support,” the grandmaster said.

In near future, the grandmaster is planning to leave for Prague; Movsesian will participate in World Chess Cup 2011 Khanty-Mansiysk in late August and Greece-hosted European Team Chess Championship 2011 in November.

On July 26, Armenian team won Ningbo- hosted World Team Chess Championship, gaining 14 points in 9 rounds.

World Chess Team Championship concluded yesterday in Ningbo, China

The World Chess Team Championship 2011 concluded yesterday in the New Century Grand Hotel Ningbo, China. The team of Armenia won the tournament and took the gold medal home. FIDE President obviously had a good feeling when he granted the Armenians with a wildcard for Ningbo. Armenia is also twice winner of the World Chess Olympiad (in 2006 and in 2008).

Alexander Kentler, columnist for "Sports Daily", highlights that the Armenians' successes are no longer surprise to anyone. With the guiding star of the ninth world champion Tigran Petrosian, who dethroned Mikhail Botvinnik in 1963, chess became the country's national sport. Serzh Sargsyan, President of the Republic, is also heading the Armenian Chess Federation and recently chess lessons were introduced into the curriculum in all schools.

The players never have to be persuaded to come under the national flag, Alexander Kentler added, they are ready to give up everything for the sake of playing for the national team. It is no wonder that there are many strong players in the country, with the leader Levon Aronian being rated among the three strongest players in the world.

This year the team was strengthened with GM Sergei Movsesian. Sergei, like Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian, was born in Tbilisi, present-day Georgia. For many years he played for Slovakia, but finally settled in his native Armenia and immediately scored a superb result for the team.

Vladimir Akopian, Gabriel Sargissian and the national champion Robert Hovhannisyan complete the strong and reliable roster.

The hosting country China took silver medal with 13 match points, while the 2010 Chess Olympiad winner Ukraine claimed bronze with 12 points. Russia was in good position to overtake the bronze, but they lost to the lower-rated India in the final round.

Final standings: 1. Armenia 14 (22.5) 2. China 13 (22.5) 3. Ukraine 12 (19.5) 4. Russia 10 (21) 5. Hungary 10 (19.5) 6. USA 10 (18.5) 7. Azerbaijan 9 (19) 8. India 7 (15.5) 9. Israel 5 (13) 10. Egypt 0 (9)

Ningbo - World Team Chess Championship 2011 - Final Round

By Chess Coach William Stewart. Original article on the 2011 World Team Chess Championship available on William's site, which includes interactive PGN's!

Armenia Scores Gold Medal

An undefeated Armenian team secured the gold medal today at the 2011 World Team Chess Championship in Ningbo, China by drawing on all 4 boards with a strong Ukrainian team. A determined Chinese team won the last 4 rounds to challenge Armenia for the top spot, including a tough 2.5-1.5 victory over a strong Hungarian team, however they fell short by a half point and achieved clear 2nd place honors. Ukraine played a great team tournament and earned clear 3rd place. Although the Russian team boasted the highest average FIDE rating at 2752, they failed to play as a cohesive team and disappointed expectations even further with a heartbreaking 1.5-2.5 last round loss to an out-of-sorts Indian team. The US team would have benefited greatly from the presence of Hikaru Nakamura (FIDE 2770), however Nakamura was unable to attend as he is playing the ongoing super-tournament in Dortmund. Gata Kamsky played great chess on board 1 to help the USA rebound from a tough start to respectably finish in 6th place. The individual board gold medals were won by Wang Hao (Board 1, China), Wang Yue (Board 2, China), Ian Nepomniachtchi (Board 3, Russia), and Alexander Areshchenko (Board 4, Ukraine). The 2011 World Team Chess Championship was a fantastically strong event (Average FIDE of 2685!) that featured some exceptionally creative, attacking chess.

Robert Hess Lifts US Chess

19 year old Robert Hess won a double-edged last round game against Evgeny Postny to propel the US to a 2.5-1.5 victory against Israel. The game evolved from a Caro-Kann (Classical Variation) involving the currently topical 6. N1e2 and 7. Nf4 - attempting to challenge black's light-squared bishop with creative piece play and the h-pawn push. The game became complicated after opposite-side castling on move 17, and Hess attempted to directly push his attack through with 27. d5!? Hess achieved a decisive advantage after temporarily sacrificing a piece with 28. dxe6! - resulting in the win of a pawn but more importantly control of the center and a dangerous attack against black's king. After a few more accurate moves, Postny resigned after 36. a5 due to his lack of activity and counterplay.

Hess Vs Postny - Position after 28. dxe6!

Wang Yue Displays Gold Medal Technique

Wang Yue played some great chess on board 2 for China, and the last round was no exception. His 53-move positional massacre over Zoltan Almasi (2726) featured thorough preparation backed by accurate technical execution. Wang Yue played the white side of the English (Neo-Catalan, Accepted Variation) and speculatively sacrificed a pawn with 16. Nc3!? to achieve long-term positional pressure on black's weak queenside pawns. Wang Yue played the middlegame and endgame flawlessly, as the 24 year-old displayed the technique of an experienced veteran to avoid permitting Almasi the slightest counterplay. Almasi resigned in a hopeless position after 53. Kf3

China and Ukraine within striking distance in the final round

With big wins today, China and Ukraine have closed the gap to just 2 points from Armenia. Ukraine will have a shot at Armenia in the final round while China takes on Hungary. If China beats Hungary and Armenia loses to Ukraine, China will likely win the Gold because of superior tiebreaks.
