I would love to receive some real postcards from Antarctica [from Vostok and all the other stations/research bases (28?)], written and stamped, preferably addressed to me, showing images like the above from wikipedia, my most favorite website.

When the first V8 engine was built in the1950s, the design brief unwittingly benefit of later generations of Bentley engineers. That is a very forward thinking design with all aluminum construction-, a five main-bearing crankshaft, and well-supported camshaft. Steps taken then laid the foundation for the longevity of the engine.

The first 6.25-liter engine that produced around 200 horsepower - the new 2007 Model Year 6.75-liter V8 has more than twice that output, with 500bhp and torque 1000Nm to T. Arnage That is the introduction of turbocharging and intercooling in the early 1980s that saw step-change increase in the performance of a V8, and the latest engine program is no different. Two new low-inertia turbochargers operate with far greater efficiency at lower engine speeds - they reach maximum turbine speed in half the time of the previous unit - thereby ensuring significantly reduced turbo lag and extraordinary wave of torque at any revs.

In addition, reprofiled camshaft with an all-new system of roller tappet provides revised valve timing and substantially improved repair. These changes also provide for increased power, enhanced durability and ensure compliance with European EU IV and U.S. LEV II standards. Although the 6.75-liter engine 2007MY producing around 300 horsepower more than 1959 predecessor, fuel consumption is only 60 percent of the original and thanks to the sophisticated fuel injection and exhaust controls, its emissions output is an incredible 99 percent lower than Bentley's first V8.

Renault Wind TCE 100 accelerates from stop to 100kph in just 10.5 seconds. 1.6 16V 133hp: engine, normally-aspirated with a flexible bag characters

Renault Wind is an alternative available to the Renault Sport Technologies-developed powerplant normally-aspirated 1.6 16V, especially field-tuned that serves as a direct pointer to the character of his fire.

This flexible, high-revving, normally-aspirated 1.6 16V engine produces 133hp (98kW) at 6750 rpm and maximum torque of 160Nm at 4400 rpm. It revs quickly and crackers all the way up to the red line set at 7000 rpm.

With the engine under the bonnet, Renault Wind gives a lot of punch and enjoyment of driving at low engine speeds and while up to 4500 rpm, although it really comes into its own when pushed beyond the limit of 4500 rpm. Wind Renault 1.6 16V accelerates from stop to 100kph just 9.2 seconds and has a top speed of 201kph, yet fuel consumption has been there at 7 litres/100km (equivalent to CO2 emissions of 165g/km).

Plug & Music connectivity permits occupants to plug digital devices such as iPod®, iPhone®, USB keys and other USB-compatible MP3 players into Renault Wind's own audio. אסמע אלחק ממן קאלה, on intellectual honesty.

The other day the question came up regarding what was Maimonides' original Arabic for his dictum "accept the truth from whatever source it comes," a phrase found in the introduction to his commentary to Pirke Avos, which is today commonly called שמונה פרקים.

Parts of his monumental Mishnah commentary were published in 1655 in the original Judeo-Arabic, with a Latin translation, by Edward Pococke in his Porta Mosis (also given the Arabic title באב מוסי, or "Bab Mosi," which is cognate with the familiar Aramaic term בבא, which also means portal).

Here is how it appears:


Ibn Tibbon's famous Hebrew translation of ואסמע אלחק ממן קאלה is ושמע האמת ממי שאמרו. Far be it from me to play Rambam exegete, but it occurs to me that Ibn Tibbon was very smart to translate סמע literally to its Hebrew cognate שמע, which usually means to hear. While it could mean "accept" (indeed, R. Kapach [sic] changed Ibn Tibbon's שמע, hear, to קבל, accept) I'm not sure that was the Rambam's intention. After all, the huge problem everyone encounters is that what is true is not always apparent or can't be tested. What does it mean to accept the truth when so many issues are inexact, to say the least? If he meant "hear the truth," it becomes much easier to understand. Maybe you're in a position to accept it, maybe not. Maybe the position is true, maybe not. But at least listen. (The preceding was homiletical, and almost certainly not what he meant. Still, food for thought.)

As for the language, a long time ago Judeo-Arabic was discussed in the comments to one of my posts, and the question of why the Jews in Spain preferred to write some of their highest level religious texts in Arabic, from responsa to investigations into Hebrew language and grammar to commentaries like these (according to medieval sources the entire Talmud was even translated to Arabic, although I doubt it), while almost every other Jewish society right up to the modern period and even to the present, they always used Hebrew for their most serious and authoritative texts. In addition, the Judeo-Arab texts use loads of very Islamic terminology as exact equivalents of Jewish terms. 'Halacha' is 'alsharia' and 'teshuva' is 'fatwa,' and so forth.

I posited that the chief difference was Arabic itself, which had two qualities that other Jewish vernaculars did not have. First, it was similar to Aramaic (and Hebrew), underscoring the fact that the Talmud and Targums were written in vernacular language. Second, the phenomenon of diglossia (one language for scholarship and one for speech) was far, far more marked in Christian society. Arabic was both the classical language of prestige and the vernacular.

In fact, as European vernaculars rose in prestige, with scholars creating lexicons and investigating their own spoken tongue, scholarship too began to be written in those languages, and the Jews in Europe too began writing scholarship in the vernacular they considered prestigious (i.e., correct Italian, German and French). Writing the vernacular in the Hebrew alphabet ultimately fell out of fashion due to other considerations, such as the widespread ability to read and write the Latin alphabet. Perhaps another difference is that the Jews perceived Islam very differently from how Jews perceived Christianity. Many parallels, from ablutions, to fixed times for prayer, to beards, to circumcision, to fasts, to nidda, to halacha/ sharia, to a body of oral teachings, etc. made "sharia" seem a lot more like "halacha" and rabbis like 'ulema' than anything found in Christendom, where these religious similarities were not only missing, but many more differences could be found. In those lands the Christians didn't esteem their own spoken language, and neither did the Jews.

Rabbi Jonathan Eybeschutz's "enkel."

If you're an American kid like me, you had a grandfather who spoke "Jewish" and liked to call you his "einikel," the Yiddish for grandchild (spelled אייניקעל in Harkavy). Since the -el suffix is also somewhat like the Yiddish diminutive you probably thought, like me, that "einikel" was the affectionate way of saying . . . einik? Or maybe, like me, you didn't really think that far, but just picked up on the fact that "einikel" sounded really warm and loving. I suppose what I'm about to say is obvious to any real Yiddish speaker, who knows that the real diminutive is -la (or -le), as in "maidele" (little girl) or "yingele" (little boy), but to American ears "einikel" sounded very much the same way. Eventually you realize that "enkel" is the German for grandchild. Oh well. I'm sure my grandfather thought I was adorable anyway.

Here is the title page to one of the volumes of בני אהובה, the 1819 publication of Rabbi Jonathan Eybeschutz's comments on the Rambam and SA Even Ha-ezer. As you can see, it was published in Prague by Doctor Gabriel Eibeschitz the "enkel" of Rabbiner und Theologen Jonathan Eibeschitz (it also includes notes by Rabbi Uri of Dresden, Dr. Gabriel's home town).


Doubtlessly you are wondering about Dr. Gabriel Eybeschutz. He was indeed a physician, and lived from about 1757 to 1849. According to one biographer he looked exactly like his grandfather, only without a beard, which may sound ad-hoc, but the same biography doesn't claim this about his other descendants, all of whom are noted. Incidentally, outside of the 'bad seed' line of R. Yonasan, namely his son Wolf and his progeny, only Dr. Gabriel was suspected of being a secret Sabbatian (grudgingly admitted by Mortimer Cohen, psycho-biographer of R. Jacob Emden). The story is that Dr. Gabriel was said to be Sabbatian, going to their meetings, and an acquaintance confronted him, telling him "You're so smart, what do you see in this nonsense?" He replied that he knows it's nonsense and he tells it to his Sabbatian acquaintances. Make what you will of that.

Rush Limbaugh said he wants President Obama to fail. "The sooner, the better for USA".
And some said "Don't listen to Rush Limbaugh and FoxNews!".
I say you should listen to and learn from your "enemies" (or detractors/ political adversaries), too.
What if they still have some valuable points, in all the noise and "fog of war"?
"An enemy is a teacher - gratis".

Unlike Rush Limbaugh, I want President Obama to succeed, and I still hope that he can do a good, if not great, job for the American people, and for the world, in general.
But there are many obstacles, all around.
"We have a situation" means "we have a problem", or even "we're deep in it".
"We're in it, to dig it!"

President Obama ("The Audacity of Hope") has to deal with:
- the war in Iraq ("The Audacity of Soap").  
As in a soap opera, in that war theater there are many actors (their skill may vary), with many dramatic conflicts (some real, some invented), and the whole story plot is an...explosive mix.  
Also, chasing soap balloons (the effect) will not help you get rid of all the soap bars (the cause).  
Against a problem with "the radicals", you need, well, radical action. 
Clerics...Incitement and radicalization are not just a "cleric-al error".

- the war in Afghanistan ("The Audacity of Dope")
The Mom and Pop(py) small business is a big business, with global impact.
The poppy fields organically grown/harvested here go on to support the impoverished dealers and consumers from various cartels and 'hoods from around the world.
"Coming soon, to a crackhouse near you!"
Also, Afghanistan is harboring other problems, as we all know.
USA still has to deal with the TORA Syndrome: from "Tora! Tora!" to Tora Bora, there are always attackers, who then pose as the victims of aggression.

- the political pressure from various countries (including, maybe, Vatican City), interest groups, religious organizations (only for the sake of rhyming, let's say "The Audacity of Pope")
You cannot please everybody at once, so prioritizing will result in temporary winners and losers.

We, in USA, are scrambling to cope with a myriad of problems, of all kinds.  
Well, ALMOST all kinds.  There are problems, here and there in the world, that we don't have to cope with.
"Like what? Like what?"
We don't feel pain in the Kuru.

You never know who's on your side, this voting time around.  
But the democrats, like many other politicians, learn early all the ropes of politics, then they pull the ropes, as instructed by the senior leadership.

2011 Nissan Leaf is a pure electric car first offered for sale to the U.S. mass market. This 5-passenger, 4-door hatchback runs exclusively on electric power. The leaves come in two trim levels, base SV and uplevel SL. All use a 107-horsepower electric motor and lithium-ion battery. Nissan claims a maximum driving range of 100 miles. Through bright trim colors inside, Nissan LEAF creates a pleasing and stylish cabin environment. An environmentally friendly "blue earth" color theme originates from the Aqua Globe body color of Nissan LEAF's introductory model. This theme is carried into the interior through blue dashboard highlights and instrument illumination.
