CHENNAI: Regular practice and ambition has helped Woman Grandmaster Cori T Deysi win the 29th SDAT-Ramco world junior chess crown here. With her brother Jorge Cori too in for company Deysi was elated at her unique feat. Deysi secured 11 points to bag the coveted title.

Hailing from Peru, Deysi who speaks Spanish fluently and a smattering of English has been steadily climbing the ladder with ease in the last couple of years. At the 2009 World Youth Chess Championship held in Antalya (Turkey), Cori won the U-16 Girls championship. She won nine of her first ten matches, and clinched the title with a round to spare. This win perhaps became the launching pad for bigger things to come.

Cori’s win on Monday came about in her third attempt. Cori can take pride from the fact that she is the first girl from her country to win the junior crown. Deysi’s first reaction on winning the crown was “shocked feeling”. The thought of being the world junior chess queen is yet to sink in. Cori believes that India’s Padmani Rout played a part in her win. Padmini Rout defeated leader Olga Girya in the final round. Olga’s defeat enabled Cori to overtake the Russian, and emerge a clear winner. Cori who said that she really did not expect to win had in fact prepared well for the tournament.

“Regular practice of five hours daily was the routine,” said Cori who took the help of fellow players to interpret as she could not speak English fluently.

Cori is pleased with her trip to the city and wishes to celebrate her unique achievement with her friends.

The Peruvian is not one to be satisfied with just one good performance. She is eager to do well in the coming tournaments and become a Grand Master soon. Well with such a supportive family and dedication, her goal is certainly not far off.
