IM Vishnu Prasanna and GM Levan Aroshidze share the first place



The 12th Obert Internacional d'Escacs de Figueres Miquel Mas, organized by C.E.Figueres, was held from 11th to 18th August in Figueres, Spain. The tournament is part of the 8th Catalan International Chess Circuit.



87 players participated in the 9-round Open. The 22-years old Indian IM Vishnu Prasanna and Georgian GM Levan Aroshidze shared the first place with 7.5 points each, but Vishnu was declared winner on better tiebreak score and takes home the trophy and 1200 EUR prize.

The 17th International Vienna Chess Open is taking place from 13th to 21st August in Vienna, Austria. The tournament is organized by the Vienna Chess Federation and under the auspices of the Mayor of Vienna, Dr. Michael Häupl.



The tournament has received enthusiastic response from the chess players, with 391 people from 39 countries competing in the main Open A. Among them are 16 Grandmasters and 32 International Masters.



In addition, Open B (U2000) has 176 players, Open C (U1600) has 70 players and Open D (U1600, 5 rounds) has 26 players. All groups, except Open D, are managed as 9-round Swiss events.

All India Open FIDE Rated Chess Tournament starting on 17th August



Nagpur (16 Aug 11): Former Commonwealth Champion Grandmaster R R Laxman of Indian Railways will starts as top seed and favourite in the 4th edition of the prestigious Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee Memorial All India Open International FIDE Rated Chess Tournament organized by Headquarters Maintenance Command, Indian Air Force that starts at Naivedhyam Celebration Centre here on Wednesday.



This prestigious event will be inaugurated by Air Marshal PV Athawale PVSM AVSM VSM ADC, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Maintenance Command, IAF at 1100 hrs on 17 Aug 11 in presence of Shri. Praveen Darade IAS, Chairman, Nagpur Improvement Trust.



Defending champion International Master K Rathnakaran of Railways, second seed International Master Anwesh Upadhyaya from Orissa, International Master S Satyapragyan of Air India, Maharashtra based Railwayman International Master Vikramaditya Kulkarni and Amravati youngster International Master Swapnil Dhopade are other prominent players in the fray and will give tough fight to Laxman’s title hopes along with other eleven International Masters and fancied players from across the country.

Along with Dhopade, International Master Akshayraj Kore will spear head the Maharashtra hopes while Wing Commander Rajesh Upadhayay and JRD Tata Chess Tournament winner Senior Non-Commissioned Officer K Srikanth will lead the Air Force Challenge.

The women challenge in the field will be led by Women Grandmaster Kiran Manisha Mohanty of Orissa. While playing at home state, Asian Youth Championship Gold medal winner Rucha Pujari of Kolhapur, World Youth Bronze Medallist Abhimanyu Puranik and Nagpur based International Master Anup Deskhmukh of LIC will try to bring cheers to the local chess buffs in this one week long Rs. 4 lacs prize money event sponsored and supported by Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Nagpur Improvement Trust Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum, State Bank of India, Life Insurance Corporation, SMS Infrastructure Ltd, Solar Explosives Ltd, Tirupati Cooperative Bank, Jindal Steels and Vilas HardeTechops Associates.

The winner will pocket a cash prize of Rs. 81,000/- along with coveted Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee Memorial trophy while top twenty players will receive cash prizes.

Three players sharing the lead after round 5

Arad Open 2011, the largest Romanian swiss tournament of the year, is entering the second half as the 5th round was played Monday. The prize fund of 4500 Euro has attracted over 150 players, among them being the winner from the 2010 event GM Vlad-Cristian Jianu.

The tournament doesn't miss the surprises as two of the favourites, Grandmasters Imre Balog (Hungary) and Petar Drenchev (Bulgaria), lost against the Romanian junior champions Stefan Tomici and Alexandru Pop. Round 5 standings are bellow.

The playing venue, Cultural Palace of Arad, usual place for classical music concerts, is very convenient for a chess event and many fans are coming daily to observe the games. The same hall hosts the children tournaments (U8 and U12), with over 70 players, some of them being the winners of medals at the strongest Romanian junior competitions.

The official opening of the tournament and also the first inaugural move was made by the Romanian Minister of Sports and Youth, Mrs.Doina Melinte, Olympic Champion in athletics in 1984, invited by the tournament organizer, IO Alin-Vivian Campeanu.

Athanasios Mastrovasilis, Azer Mirzoev and Adam Hunt share the first place

The 3rd International Chess Tournament "Artemis Cup" was held from 12th to 19th July at the Convention Center Crithoni’s Paradise Hotel, Crithoni on the island of Leros, Greece.

The 9-round Swiss open was organized by the Municipality of Leros, E.S.TH. (Union Of Chess Players Of Thessaloniki) and Educational and Cultural Youth Club "Artemis". The prize fund amounted to 5600 EUR, with 1200 EUR being reserved for the winner.

GM Athanasios Mastrovasilis, who was also joint winner in the 2nd Artemis Cup, GM Azer Mirzoev and IM Adam Hunt share the first place with 7 points each. Mastrovasilis takes the trophy on best tiebreak.

Leros is a Greek island and municipality in the Dodecanese in the southern Aegean Sea. Leros is known for its imposing medieval castle of the Knights of Saint John, built on a Byzantine fortress. In ancient times it was considered the island of Parthenos Iokallis and linked to the Hellenistic and Roman literature on Meleager and the Meleagrides.

The 6th Poti International Chess Festival "Nana Aleksandria's Cup - 2011" is being played on 10-19th July in Poti, Georgia. The Festival consists of seven events: Open, Boys under age 8, Girls under age 8, Boys under age 10, Girls under age 10, Boys under age 12 and Girls under age 12. The festival is amanged by the Local Management of Poti, Georgian Chess Federation and Chess and Draughts complex sport school of Poti "Nana". The total prize fund is 18 000 USD. SARATOGA, Wyo. (AP) — A chess grandmaster will be in Saratoga on Friday to match his skills against all comers.

Sergey Kudrin became a grandmaster in 1984. His accomplishments over the years include playing to a draw against a former world champion.

He lives in Connecticut and is recognized as one of the top chess players in the U.S.

Kudrin is scheduled play an exhibition against chess aficionados Friday at the Saratoga Resort & Spa.

The event costs $20 and kicks off the second annual Wild West Chess Tournament. The Rawlins Daily Times reports last year's event drew about 60 people.

Tournament matches will be Saturday and Sunday. Other competitions will include a U.S. G/15 championship game Saturday.

GM Semen Dvoirys from Chelyabinsk wins the tournament with 7.5 points

The Russian city of Samara hosted a 9-round Open tournament dedicated to the memory of legendary Grandmaster Lev Polugaevsky. The tournament, which is also a qualifier for the 2011 Russian Cup, took place from 5th to 13th July with 11300 EUR in prizes.

GM Semen Dvoirys from Chelyabinsk won the key final game with black pieces and claimed a clear first place with 7.5 points. His earlier co-leaders Pavel Smirnov and Jakov Geller could only achieve draws and land on the shared second place.

WGM Natalija Pogonina won the best woman prize, while the top seeded Denis Khismatullin finished on tied 24th place.

The 13th Obert Internacional Sant Marti 2011 will take place from 13th to 21st July at the Centre Civic Sant Marti c.Selva de Mar 213 in Barcelona. The 9-round Swiss tournament is part of the 8th Catalan International Circuit.

The organizer of the tournament is Eduardo Arilla Santos and Director of the Tournament is Joan Fontanillas Sanchez. The prize fund totals 5,200€ and the Champion will receive 1200€ and a trophy.

The tournament starts shortly after the Torredembarra Open and a number of players, including the top seed Viktor Moskalenko, will continue the Circuit at the Centre Civic Sant Marti. In addition, GM Manuel Leon Hoyos of Mexico and a strong Cuban delegation are also participating.

The Russian city of Samara is paying a tribute to the legendary Grandmaster Lev Polugaevsky. The Memorial tournament is taking place from 5th to 13th July as a 9-round Swiss competition. The total prize fund is 11300 EUR and the tournament is a qualifier for the 2011 Russian Cup. Denis Khismatullin, Alexander Lastin, Orissa Open winner Aleksej Aleksandrov and Rilton Cup winner Sergey Volkov are the top rated players. GM Pavel Smirnov started furiously with five straight victories and then in the 6th round he conceded the first draw to IM Jakov Geller. The 7th Memorial Chess Tournament "Uroš Dinić" was held on Sunday, 10th July in Paracin, Serbia. The 9-round rapid event with 15-min time control used the rest day of the main tournament - 4th International Chess Festival Sport Summer.

Top seeded GM Branko Damljanovic and the talented junior Aleksandar Indjic dictated the pace throughout the event but they were both eventually defeated in the last round. Nevertheless, their impressive run was sufficient for the shared second place. GM Boban Bogosavljevic took advantage of such development and claimed a clear first place with 7.5 points.

87 players from 13 countries took participation, with 10 Grandmasters, 11 International Masters and 13 FIDE Masters in the field. Full standings bellow.
